NYCx, launched in 2018, invites global problem-solvers to partner with the City to develop and test novel solutions to pressing real-life challenges. NYCx works with City agencies on the biggest and most urgent problems they need to make progress on with the goal of using new or emerging technology to improve lives. As Strategic Designer in Residence at Cornell Tech, Zamchick Group engaged the NYCx team and other city agencies to generate a prototypical challenge associated with the 2020 Census. We employed a visual process that generated actionable output for the agency and a way forward for the NYCx team.      

A “Moonshot Canvas” became the core challenge-defining work space. When completed, it gives an overview of challenge rationale: why now, key issues and constraints, how the challenge aligns with NYC goals, end user benefits, and metrics for success.
